Features

This jacket is based on our L4 Field Jacket, with all the details refined purely for winter warfare. Note that this is not a padded winter parka – layering and proper over-garments are still important. However, the field-jacket-like features make this jacket practical to use with all sorts of combat and load-bearing gear.

Practical and Easy to Maintain

Functionality hasn’t come at the cost of reliability: durability, ease of care, and repairability are all built in. Buttons are Canadian tape buttons, and worn-out hook-and-loop panels are easy to replace. Always loosen the hem and hood elastic cords before washing. There’s nothing “too high-tech” in the L4 Winter Field Jacket that would make it unusable or unrepairable if a single detail fails.

Functionality for Winter Conditions

In addition to the durable, non-rustling fabric, the construction includes many details to maintain operational capability. Ventilation zippers reduce heat stress; less heat stress means less sweating, and less sweating means less freezing in the cold.

A tightly closing collar with hood and a longer hem with drawcord adjustment provide extra protection in winter conditions. Securing the crotch strap prevents snow and wind from blowing up under the hem.

Five Pockets

The L4 Winter Field Jacket doesn’t have hem pockets – pockets at the hem would be crushed under a vest, belt, or rucksack hip belt, causing nothing but frustration. The chest pockets are flat, and the left chest pocket includes a small hook-and-loop-closed compartment for critical small items you don’t want to drop into the snow while digging through with gloves on. Each sleeve has a top-opening pocket familiar from our Recon Smock, which are easier to use with gloves compared to zippered pockets.

L4 – Field Wear

The fourth layer of the Varusteleka Clothing System can generally be described as the “standard field uniform”. The purpose of this layer is to protect the user from observation and to shield lower layers from wear. L4 clothes and accessories are lightweight, durable field garments designed for functionality. Camouflage-printed fabrics and visible accessories are fully NIR-compliant.
