This pattern is ideal for desert environments worldwide, but it also works perfectly on Finnish shooting ranges and other sandy pits elsewhere.
In the early 2000s, the Finnish Defence Forces began developing new military uniform and camouflage patterns. Participation in the UN peacekeeping operation on the Eritrean and Ethiopian border, which started in 2000, first created the need for a dedicated desert camouflage pattern. The pattern, initially named K2004 during its prototype phase, was adopted by Finnish forces in 2003, along with a new uniform model. Early models were made from heavier fabric, but eventually, the M04 hot-weather uniform became standardized, made from lightweight ripstop fabric. The pattern was officially named M04.
