A long story short: these are bloody awesome winter mittens, part of the US Marine super duper cold weather system. They will keep your hands dry and warm in pretty much anywhere on this planet. When new, these cost craploads and they are pretty much in unissued condition, but the price is still very nice. Some sort of insanity on our part, so buy fast before we are cured. Available with and without the flame-resistant inner glove. BOth are excellent choices.
These winter mittens form the US Marine Extreme Cold Weather Mitten System (ECWMS). They consist of three parts: the outer mitten that has a waterproof Gore-Tex membrane, a flame-resistant glove insert, and a liner glove. Some came without that glove insert, so we separated those under their own, cheaper variety. None of these include the thin liner glove, but they work very well even without it. Or you can buy some thin liners separately.
The outer mittens aren’t thin shell gloves. They have a warm lining, so they are warm winter gloves in their own right. Perfect for normal Finnish winters. They have a durable leather palm and inside of the thumb. The cuff is very long, and you can adjust it to keep the wind and snow outside. The gloves also have adjustable lanyards that keep you from losing the mitts that easily.
The flame-resistant glove insert also has a warm lining, so when used together, they keep your hands warm in one helluva cold winter when frost giants come out and play. The glove inserts are attached to the mittens with hook and loop. When you wear these with the glove inserts, they are very thick and thus quite stiff. You can shovel snow and do such stuff but nothing that requires finer motorics.
The color of the leather palms varies from light brown to dark brown and greenish. Some of these even have one palm darker and the other lighter brown. Some gloves go under the name Outdoor Research Firebrand Mitts (worth googling), some just say Extreme Cold Weather Mitten. In any case, the manufacturer and properties are the same, and they all are manufactured in the USA.
US Marine Corps surplus. These are in such a nice condition that they could well be unissued. However, since some don’t have the inner glove and some have mismatching color palms, we flagged them all as regular milsurp. Lucky you, because these really are in excellent condition and this is a bargain in comparison to what these cost when new.
