Product description

One of the best military rucksacks ever made, available once again. As the stocks are depleting the ALICE pack only rises in popularity. A classic design, you can carry it with or without the frame. Comes in two sizes, Medium and Large, with the Medium being the more desirable one.

The latest batch included some shoulder straps and hip belts which were replaced with current-production spares, which are not genuine US-made items.

Originally developed in the '70s as a part of the ALICE system, this rucksack served the US Army officially for about 30 years. These were still produced in the '90s and even later. And why not, as this is one hell of a rucksack! For the civilian end user, this pack offers a good capacity in a strong nonchalant package at a reasonable cost. If you have no need for MOLLE stuff, this pack is for you.

The pack is made up of the (about 40 l) main compartment with a pocket for a radio, and three outer pockets (each can easily take an MRE or a canteen). In addition, the rucksack is covered with ALICE attachment points. The shoulder straps are padded and feature a quick-release system. Unlike the Large version, this can be used without the frame.

Genuine US Army surplus

Used but still perfectly serviceable, color shades may vary a bit, but all are green. The shoulder strap models also vary. Note that the included shoulder straps and/or hip belts may be reproduction items.

Probably the better pack than the large version. I had one of each at about the time of the 1990/91 Gulf War. We got given a load of second hand Berghaus Crusaders in the desert one day; I picked out a good one and never used my large Alice pack again. They aren't that great to have to carry. However I still have my medium Alice pack, which I use without a frame. The frame makes it too bulky for use as a daysack, for which it's ideal: you can carry any military load in the main compartment - CBRN suit, radio, warm clothing, poncho + liner, extra rations and water. Basically anything that's not on your belt kit but you need for an overnight patrol. Therefore it easily covers civvy daysack use. It's a great pack from the days when gear wasn't ridiculously over-designed, and I'd still have it as my first choice patrol pack today. The British forces didn't get good rucksacks until the '90 pattern green PLCE came in in the early 1990s, so Alice packs and Berghaus rucksacks were the gear to have in the '80s & '90s.

Protip: Get your hands on a US ALICE belt or equivalent and you can use it in lieu of the standard hip belt, giving you room for utility pouches and canteens right at your waist.
