That’s not a folding saw. THIS is a folding saw! In case you need to go through bigger logs like a beaver on crank, reach higher than the sky, and conquer the seven kingdoms with your might alone, get this! This beefy two-handed folding saw that was named after the samurai sword is Silky’s answer to the chainsaw but without noise or pollution. Superior resharpenable Japanese-style blade.
Silky Katanaboy comes with a long 500 mm (19.7") blade. There are yet larger Silky saws but this is big enough for most things. The blade length you want depends on the diameter of the wood you want to cut. A rule of thumb is that the blade should be at least twice as long as the branch. Of course, the longer the blade, the faster the job gets done.
The larger the teeth are, the faster and more aggressively you can saw with it. Smaller teeth give you more control. Katanaboy comes with extra-large teeth, which are ideal for tougher jobs, such as cutting down trees or sawing thick tree trunks. They aren’t best suited for dry wood because the teeth will have difficulties grabbing the wood and will cause heavy vibrations. For those jobs, we recommend smaller teeth.
The precision-ground teeth have four cutting surfaces each. Unlike classic Western saws, they are "non-set", so that the cutting surface cuts straight into the wood. The clever design of the teeth has several advantages. You can saw faster with less power and the blade doesn’t get stuck in the wood that easily. The teeth don’t tear the wood, instead, they create a very fine and smooth saw cut. These teeth have not been impulse-hardened, so they can be sharpened with a file. And if needed, the saw blade can be easily replaced.
The saw blade is made from premium Japanese SK4 carbon steel. It has a high wear resistance so that the blade remains sharp for a long time. The core is softer, so the saw stays flexible. The electroless nickel plating allows the entire blade, even the teeth to be coated. It provides excellent wear and rust resistance, improved cutting performance, and extended blade life.
The ergonomic rubber handle absorbs vibrations and offers a superior grip even when wet or while wearing gloves. Moreover, the handle feels comfortably warm, even in cold temperatures.
This saw comes with a black nylon storage bag with velcro closure, black nylon shoulder strap and back storage pocket for replacement blades.
This is the ideal saw for BIG jobs, such as trail maintenance, sawing logs for firewood, or building bigger shelters as well as large tasks at home or cottage. This powerful saw has half a meter (nearly 20") blade, with which you can easily saw through tree trunks of 25 cm (10"). A bit like a chainsaw but without the oil, gasoline, noise, and pollution. Yet it isn’t super heavy or clumsy either.
Unlike the western saws, Japanese saws cut on the pull stroke. Pulling keeps the blade straight, so the blade can be thinner without feeling wobbly. They are also easier to use because pulling is easier to control than pushing and they take less energy.
Katanaboy has a security screw that prevents the accidental opening or closing of the blade. To open the blade, first screw open this security feature, then press the blade lock and pull the blade open. For safety purposes, the saw can first be folded halfway open. Press the lock again to open it fully. This is a pretty neat feature, especially when closing the saw. You won’t guillotine your fingers that easily.
When not in use, clean your Katanaboy of dirt and store it in the closed position in a dry place.
