Features
This is nothing too fancy, but just what you need from a side pouch on your backpack. The zipper is covered to protect it from water, abrasion, and dirt. The vertical webbing on the front keeps the compression straps of your backpack neatly in place over the pouch. This also enables the straps to compress the pouch properly. They can also be used as attachment points for bungee cords, carabiners, and stuff like that.
A 25 mm webbing loop and a D-ring on top of the rear interior wall allow you to secure small and important stuff. The flat rear compartment offers rudimentary organization for smaller stuff. A grommet at the bottom removes any water that may seep into the pouch.
Use
With a capacity of six liters, this is a medium size pouch, not small, not huge. Something you would expect to see on a 30-80-liter backpack. Below there are some examples of what you can fit in one of these.
- Large tarp and accessories
- Hammock and an underquilt
- Lightweight puffy jacket and pants or rainwear
- Two regular 1.5-liter beverage bottles
- Trangia 27-series stove, fuel, and some stuff to cook
- Jetboil stove, a gas cartridge, water, and some stuff to cook
- 24h worth of rations and snacks
PALS attachment
On the backside, you have the standard Savotta PALS attachment webbing system with tuck tabs. However, the middlemost horizontal webbing rows were eliminated as they didn’t really do anything besides adding weight.
There is a c. 9 cm (3.5") gap between the two vertical attachment straps. It enables you to carry axes, fishing poles, etc. stuffed down behind the pouch.
Optimal attachment requires a width of four channels and a height of six (min. five) rows of PALS webbing. When tightened down, your pack's side compression straps will eliminate any movement of the pouch and its contents.
The 6 L side pouch fits all Savotta Jääkäri series packs. On packs with less than six rows of PALS webbing on the sides, the bottom of the pouch will "hang". You can let the side compression straps take care of that, or you can choose to attach the pouch one step higher up on the side of the pack.
