Time after time, winter always comes around. If you find yourself unlucky enough not to have a Finnish Defence Forces issued "nallepuku" (the bear suit), today is your lucky day – you can get yourself a similar but improved version! These here are the L2 Thermal Long Johns, and you would be wise to pair them with the L2 Thermal Sweater. Made in Finland.
We didn’t try to reinvent the wheel but simply made a solid, basic Thermal Layer Set. The fabric weight, composition, and cut are selected so that despite its warmth, the pants, for instance, won’t restrict movement even at temperatures around -15°C / 5°F or lower. It fits snugly but stretches just right. No chafing, no twisting, and it’s easier to breathe (and pass the occasional gas). It should be stated that this isn’t the ideal outfit for long dynamic activities unless it’s really cold outside. For milder conditions, thinner mid-layers like the L2 Mid Layer Set are more suitable.
And if there's no arctic combat in your near future, these are also great for lounging around, especially during colder seasons!
The second layer of the Särmä TST clothing system is designed for light insulation and moisture transfer from the base layer. The L2’s place is over the base layer, beneath field clothing. It can also function as a next-to-skin layer, ensuring adaptability to varying temperatures. The merino wool blend is comfortable against bare skin and efficiently wicks moisture (sweat) away from the body. Staying dry makes life a little more tolerable in all conditions. However, this L2 Thermal Layer Set is intended for action in distinctly colder environments.

The material is a comfortable, medium-thick merino terry. The composition is 49% merino wool, 49% acrylic, and 2% polyester, with a fabric weight of 265 g/m2. Merino wool is like regular wool, but with finer fibers, providing better insulation, even when wet. The synthetic fibers enhance the durability of the knit, as pure wool is not very strong and can easily wear out, especially from friction.
What’s particularly cool about merino wool clothing is *that feeling* when you realize you’re not feeling cold or clammy after a short burst of activity. Even when soaking wet, merino wool feels surprisingly pleasant – especially compared to cotton. This is important for high-activity use, and of course, it adds a clear comfort factor for everyday wear.
100% Mulesing-free! We require all our suppliers to provide mulesing-free certified merino wool, so you can wear these with peace of mind.
