Product description

The Austrian Bundesheer issues proper combat knives to all soldiers. The Glock FM 81 a special version with a saw blade. These are high-quality knives made by Glock in Austria and suitable for general utility tasks and hard use.

The Glock FM 81 is a simple and durable tool. It was developed in co-operation with the Austrian special forces Jagdkommando. Glock knives are used by various armies and armed special units in Austria, Denmark, Germany (GSG9), Taiwan, and South Korea to name a few.

Instead of a fancy name and super-duper features, the knife is a plain, honest utility knife with an affordable price tag. They omitted all superfluous details and the only special features are the bottle opener, which is just a bent crossguard, and a saw on the back of the blade. It is officially meant for cutting wood but we suspect the Austrians use these to interrogate prisoners somewhere on a desolate mountain.

Differing from traditional puukko-knives and all folding knives, the Glock knife isn't a precision instrument you'd have to handle with care. You can use the knife for throwing and prying ammo crates open, and the EPD coating protects the blade in pretty much all environments and also from wear. Note that the end of the handle isn't made for hitting and could be damaged but it would be cosmetic only.

The Glock Knife as a Bayonet

Some countries have legislation concerning bayonets. Whether the Glock FM 81 classifies as a bayonet is anyone's guess. Commonly, bayonets have very obvious slots and locking mechanisms for attaching to a rifle but these are nowhere to be seen on the Glock. Many users of the knife probably don't even know about this!

The end of the handle has a detachable plug but it's very tight and removing it is likely to leave marks. You can carefully press a thin blade into the groove and rotate it around the plug to make a slightly larger groove where you can push a thicker blade and progressively continue until the plug comes off.

Removing the plug reveals a 12 x 39 mm hole, officially for a bayonet adapter, but ingenious people can use it for anything else.

Made by Glock

Best known for their pistols for 40 years, Glock originally made knives, shovels, and other polymer and steel items for the Austrian armed forces among others. You can spot Glock stamps on Austrian surplus combat gear, for example on the polymer clips that are essentially modernized US Keepers.

Made in Austria.

Great knife. Great bang for your buck! I find this knife better in the field than the US Ka Bar or the Canadian Gorham knives. It is strong and comes reasonably sharp. Very robust. The saw edge on the back is quite handy. The sheath is fantastic with a locking notch that prevents the knife from leaving the sheath unexpectedly. There is also a drain hole in the bottom of the sheath. On the inside bottom of the sheath there is a tie down hole. This is an essential piece of equipment. The price is wonderful compared with prices for the same knife in Canada.

Excellent knife, well balanced, and very reasonably priced for what you get! This is the sort of knife that you can use hard in the field and which, if you are unlucky enough to lose it, it won't entirely ruin your day (whereas I'd be very upset if I lost a $350 knife!) I'm not so sure the saw teeth on the spine of the blade are that useful for actually sawing wood--I've yet to try using my FM 81 for such a purpose. The only complaints I have about the FM 81 (none of which are serious enough to warrant taking off any stars) is that I wish the blade were offered in some other color than black--I can already envision that the black coating will get scraped off after a couple years of hard use. But then again, maybe having a very weathered FM81 may not be such a bad thing, and it may actually look even better than a pristine one! As for one-handed unsheathing, that isn't too difficult if you think of the sheathe a bit more like a level 2 retention pistol holster and less like the typical leather or kydex scabbard or sheath which usually retains the blade with just friction. If you sheathe the knife such that the edge is facing outwards, then it is easy for you to hook your finger under the straight portion of the crossguard whilst using your thumb to press the retaining clip away from the hilt enough for you to free the knife then grasp and pull the grip like you would with any other knife. If you keep your finger close to the crossguard, it will naturally fall onto the ricasso just beneath it, so there's not as much risk of slicing your finger. The only downsides to this approach are that it's not quite as fast as just yanking a blade out of a friction-fit sheath, and if that retaining clip somehow snaps off--which seems somewhat unlikely but s--t happens--then the sheath becomes useless. Perhaps an improved sheath could have a metal retaining clip, although that would risk scratching the blade. In short, the FM 81 is the epitome of what a combat or field knife should be--durable, ergonomic, and very affordable.

Extremely good all purpouse knife. Very tough and functional. Saw isn't exactly for sawing more for making little notches in wood for traps and things like that. I have seen a guy throwing these and he said it's a good throwing knife. Will buy another
