Proper good winter mittens with a thick and strong leather palm plus warm insulation. The camo fabric on the wrist and the back of your hand conceal you from the enemy and the taxman. Army surplus but in very good condition.
Here’s a pair of mittens made to survive a war or two. Leather is a lot tougher than most fabrics, and you can even lift hot skillets and pots from the campfire without melting the palm in your hand. The cuffs are nice and long, and they can be adjusted to keep the ill wind outside.
These have quite a warm lining, so they are at home when shoveling snow or tackling other wintery tasks at home or in the wilderness. In case you plan on joining an Antarctic expedition or hiking across Lapland during the Fimbulwinter, you should get a thicker pair or put merino wool gloves underneath if your pair is big enough.
The shell fabric is DPM camo-patterned cotton or cotton blend, the palm and fingertips are made of thick black leather, and the lining is 100% polyester.
These mittens have fairly long fingers but they aren’t super wide. If you want more loose-fitting mittens, take one size larger.
Dutch military surplus. These are sold used but appear to be used very little or some could also be unissued. However, they have been stored in some lost Ark warehouse for a long time, so your mittens might feel a bit stiff in the beginning. Don’t worry, the leather will get supple in use because it hasn’t turned dry or brittle.
