Product description

This is the jacket of the current issue German Bundeswehr rain suit. Very simple and sensible hardshell overgarment to wear when it's wet and nasty.

All in all a very simple "GTX" jacket with a couple of handy features for use in the field:

  • Zipper and snap closure on the front.
  • A large, adjustable hood.
  • Drawcord adjustment at the hem.
  • Hook 'n' loop sleeve cuff adjustment.
  • Two hem pockets.
  • Generous cut to fit over all other clothing.

Waterproof membrane

Made of Gore-Tex or Sympatex, this membrane "breathes"; it lets moisture out, keeping the wearer dry. Microscopic holes in the membrane let water vapor pass through, but are too small for liquid water to do the same (although in the case of Sympatex the mechanism is somewhat different). However, no rain suit breathes as well as regular non-rainwear. For this reason, they're still best reserved for wet and nasty weather or blocking the wind in light activity.

On the very top there is (or has been) a DWR coating with a job of blocking most of the water before it even touches the membrane.

Genuine BW issue

In used but perfectly serviceable condition. The DWR coating on the top of the fabric may have faded with time, but it can be revived with standard wet blocking sprays.

This is an awesome raincoat and I could not have made a better purchase. These things are perfect for people who are on their bicycles a lot, as they breathe air well while protecting you from the rain and wind. This is something normal ponchos don't do. I wear it to work too and most of my clients seem to like the look, which is certainly a plus.

The coat I received was in good condition and I'm delighted with it. Only flaw is that the unwired hood is a pain unless you also wear a hat. Be gentle with reproofing everyone, I washed a previous german goretex coat in a machine and most of tape came away, needed hours of gluing and retaping and even then some subtle bubbling of lining means it needed soaking in a DWR.
