Fairly lightweight and packable thermal pants for layered clothing in extremely cold weather. Austrian Bundesheer surplus, unbeatable quality for the price!
The strength of layered clothing is adaptability. But if you can't easily add or remove layers, you are less likely to do so. These thermal pants represent a design that accounts for actual field conditions and the needs of users: They are quick and easy to don and doff, lack any unnecessary details, and are short enough to avoid bunching and bulk at the ankles.
The Austrian army thermal pants are designed to be worn under the field clothing or shell pants but you can also quickly put them on over everything else - for quick insulation during a short break. Thanks to the full-length side zippers, you can put these on without taking off your winter boots or pants: just lower your field pants to the ankles, put these on and close the zippers, and pull the field pants back up.
The fit is rather loose for freedom of movement and better insulation. Don't pick a large size because "it's the only way to be sure." Stick to the recommendations, and you should be fine.
These are made in various widths and lengths – just like jeans! The Austrian Bundesheer size in the brackets uses regular numbers for the width and Roman numerals for the length. Even in the case of pants, the width is based on chest size, as is common in Europe. The assumption is that a regular man will have a waist 12 cm (~5") smaller than his chest.
The size conversions and recommendations are based on our measuring work, customer feedback, and naturally wearing these ourselves. Don't get hung up on the numbers, though: surplus clothes often have variation.
Pay attention: the waist sizes below are recommended body measurements! The actual pants are larger for clearance.

The inseam length is very short on purpose: to protect the larger muscles and surface areas and avoid bunching at the ankles – the winter boots take care of anything below these. For the Regular length (III-IV), the inseams are about 66–68 cm (26"–27").

Made of quilted fabric; thin outer and inner fabrics with insulation in between. Everything is 100% Polyester. The labels allow washing at 60 degrees Celsius, but 40 is recommended.
Made in Austria by various contractors for the Bundesheer. High-quality stuff to begin with; these are used but still in good condition. A thread might be loose here or there.
The side zippers may be quite delicate about the positioning when you close them. If you close them with the teeth misaligned, they might get stuck. Using these properly in cold weather might be challenging but is doable.
