Steel and heat treatment

80CrV2 carbon steel is used in all our carbon steel knives. The thing is that it´s nothing special really, just really good tool steel that can take basically any beating and offers great edge retention.

The heat treatment we use leaves the surface of the steel softer than the inside. This actually functions a lot like fancy differential heat treatments, making these knives very tough.

The heat treatment and softer surface are also why we have added the bevels to the spine, a simple polished spine was not enough for use with ferro rods but with these little bevels that uncover the inner, harder steel we get a spine that strikes ferro rods really well!

Carbon steel care

If your knife gets wet in the bush, dry it the best you can. Never store the knife without drying and oiling the blade.

DIY handle

This puukko has a very durable full tang blade. The tang comes out of the back, forming a little knob with a hole for lanyards and such. The tang is bare so you can make the handle of your dreams or leave it as it is. Make the handle pieces from a suitable piece of wood or combine antlers or some other beautiful materials. The bare tang has 8 mm (5/16") holes for attaching the handle pieces.

In case you don’t have the possibility to make a hard handle at home but would still like a DIY handle, the answer is Paracord. In the video (see photos), we’ll show you how to make a pretty and functional handle quite easily.

Description

A very small and handy little puukko knife for home and wilderness for all DIY folks. Easy to carry, great for all those detailed tasks, and sturdy as hell. Make a wicked cool handle from wood or more exotic materials or wrap a simple yet comfortable Paracord handle. If you don’t need to battle fierce cave trolls, this works perfectly as your primary knife. If you like ‘em bigger, take one of these as a spare one. This set includes the knife and the bare tang leather sheath.

Use

A bigger knife isn’t always better. Usually, a very small bladed puukko is just the tool you need for most tasks in the wild. For heavier chores, you can then use an axe or a big Skrama. It is also wise to carry a spare knife in case you manage to lose the primary tool. This is also perfect for opening packages, peeling oranges, whittling this and that, and any other common tasks at home. And one of these could also be nice in the toolbox of your car.

Blade

Just like our other Jääkäripuukkos, this knife has a drop point puukko-style blade profile, and the spine is ground and beveled to strike sparks from ferro rods. You will be thankful for this when your clothes and matches are wet, the sky is falling, and you need a warming fire.

Leather Sheath

A simple black leather sheath for simple knives. Minimalistic and purpose-built; keeps the knife safe and can be attached to clothing and gear in multiple ways.

The sheath is fitted for the Bare tang knife and knives will only fit with the tang bare. Adding custom handle plates or wraps will require modification of the sheath. Modifications will void your right to return the sheath but we still stand by the quality i.e. if there's a warranty issue that's not related to your modification, we'll take care of it.

Made from a single folded piece of leather with an additional strip of leather protecting the stitching. The top of the sheath has a simple attachment point for lanyards, key rings, carabiners, etc. for securing and carrying the sheath.

Sustainable leather

The leather of Varusteleka sheaths comes from Pelo Leather, a family-owned Central Ostrobothnian tannery founded in 1897. In addition to producing top-quality sheath and Nappa leathers with a minimized waste of materials and emissions, they are respectful towards the source of the raw materials: the animals as well as the nature in which they live.

Pelo Leather uses elk and yak hides provided by hunters and nomads, and only cowhides that are a side-product of the milk and meat industries. The cowhides come from local abattoirs that have standards for ensuring the wellbeing of the animals. No animals are reared for the purpose of producing these leathers.

Their business quarter is 25 years and a lot of effort is put into the processes and logistics of the business, to provide a cleaner environment for future generations. We tip our hats at them and are proud to have their leather in our sheaths!
