How would you feel about a high quality unused winter down sleeping bag but at quite a bit lower price than usual? We bought a batch of these army winter sleeping bags that were never issued. These come with a compression bag that will pack these very small.
This is a custom model by Carinthia not available for civilian market but featurewise it is supposed to be pretty close to Carinthia XP DOWN 1000. They do have one minus: they have been stored inside the compression bag, which is the reason for the pretty steep discount. The positive thing is that they are still winter friendly and you don’t need to buy the compression bag separately. The supplier estimated that their Comfort level is now around -16 degrees Celsius (3.2 F), so still a very good winter bag. The ones we opened don’t seem to be compressed to death and fluffing them seemed to work very well. We haven't tested these in those temperatures but at least in an open shelter in snow in -10 degrees Celsius (14 °F). Beauty sleep was quite pleasant in a t-shirt, which means that the promise is pretty apt.
Lookswise this is an olive green mummy bag with a robust zipper plus a velcro closure both above and below the zipper. The inner velcro hides the zipper inside a down-insulated flap, which is very nice when it is super cold. There’s also a drawcord around the hood, which can tighten the bag to keep the wind outside.
In short: This is an unused military grade down sleeping bag with (at least) similar temperature limits of a Carinthia Defence 4, while it can be compressed to the size of Defence 1, and costs a big stack of euros less than an off-the-shelf equivalent civilian product (price around 600€). One-off lot only available at Varusteleka!
The outer shell is 100% polyamide 6.6 Ripstop. The inner lining is 100% polyamide 6.6. The filling material is European goose down with the down to feather ratio 90/10, which means 90% down and 10% small feathers, which is the best option available.
When you get this in your hands, take the sleeping bag out of the compression bag and fluff properly. Then store it loose or inside a big and breathable cloth sack. Put it back in the compression bag only when you travel with it. This way you will keep the down in good shape.
These came in two sizes: large and even larger. They will fit the sleeper plus all the stuff you want to keep warm very nicely. You can also fit another sleeping bag inside when you want to sleep outdoors in nuclear winter. The measurements are measured from the outside when the bag is flat.
