Open chest wounds can lead to much more than just blood loss. For this reason, chest seals are an essential part of modern first aid and a valuable addition to any trauma kit. Tension pneumothorax caused by penetrating upper torso injuries is one of the battlefield’s deadliest wounds. With a chest seal, you can cover a projectile or blade-induced puncture to prevent air from entering the chest cavity. Vented chest seals feature a one-way valve that allows excess air to escape from the pleural space during exhalation while preventing air from entering during inhalation.
