How about an awesome tarp in the classic Finnish M91 camo pattern that some of us love and others love to hate? We had a little bit of this epic fabric hidden away and decided to sacrifice it on this collector’s item in honor of Varusteleka’s 20th anniversary. This is a super limited edition, and we won’t get more, so get yourself a piece of Finnish military nostalgia before the sad violin of despair plays you a tune.
A tarp is an epitome of a light and versatile shelter that is easy to use and carry. Although this particular one isn’t technically very light nor that easy to carry unless compared to some huge ass 70s camping tents. But simple and easy it is. The divinely beautiful M91 camouflage was the standard Finnish Defence Forces pattern from the 90s to mid-2000s. In Finland, it is affectionately known as "pickle relish". It blends into the Finnish forest like pineapple on pizza.
The main material is Savotta’s M91-patterned tent fabric. Because this is some sort of a Great Old One fabric, we don’t have any arcane knowledge of its consistency. However, we meticulously tested it in the shower, and the fabric is either waterproof or treated as such.
The tie-down points are made from strong 20 mm (0.8") webbing and underneath them there are reinforcement patches. The seams aren’t taped but the thread we used swells up and plugs the needle holes. No carry bag included.
Tarps turn into many different shelters. Check out the pics and read more in this article on tarps to find ideas.
The size of the tarp is 290 x 290 cm (114" x 114"). It is perfect for two happy campers if you want to store your gear underneath it. If you don’t have any gear or the stuff can be dumped outside, you can fit three sleepers. For one person, there’s plenty of space for you and all your crap.
The tarp weighs 2.3 kg (5.1 lbs), so it isn’t some silly ultralight contraption. It is a proper good ol’ time tarp that should evoke genuine perkelesque feelings when you carry it in the wilderness.
