The Leatherman Surge is the biggest and baddest multi-tool with large scissors and heavy-duty pliers. Its special trick is the Blade Exchanger which allows using various T-shank jigsaw blades but also removing the diamond file for sharpening the knife on the tool itself. Self-reliance to the max!
At three-quarters of a pound, The Surge is not the tool for weight-weenies or weak whiners. It's big and built to withstand harder use than most other multi-tools out there. The spring-loaded scissors are larger than usual and engineered to activate the return spring only when they are fully open. This makes stowing them easier without having to flip one handle all the way around.
Each handle is stamped from a single piece of stainless steel sheet with steel inserts at the ends. The action is tight at first but becomes very smooth over time with repeated use and a drop of oil into the moving parts certainly doesn't hurt.
The tool is not really that pocketable but comes with a nylon sheath for PALS platforms (e.g. on MOLLE vests), and can be tethered to a lanyard.
The Surge has robust and large pliers and all the modern tools you would expect with a couple of special ones: the scissors are much bigger than usual and the saw blade / file can be removed and replaced with T-shank jigsaw blades.
All tools have positive locks to ensure you can safely push while turning a screw, for example. The ends of the pliers meet precisely – a detail we appreciate.
