What the hell is a fanny pack?

Does a fanny pack really need an introduction? It's the waist bag that all the 90s kids remember as an extremely practical piece of kit. You could carry everything you needed while keeping your hands free for playing. Then, some fashion guru decided they were lame and shouldn't exist. Bollocks to that — there's no handier way to carry your gear! 

A waist bag is ideal when you've got more crap than your pockets can hold, but a backpack would be overkill. Unlike the 90s versions, though, ours don't come in neon green or bright orange — just earthy colors or various camo patterns.

A fanny pack — also known as a hip pack or waist bag— is a small bag worn around the waist that sits on your hips and leaves your hands free. Unlike a backpack, you don't have to take it off to check what's inside. And if the fashion gurus' propaganda has left such deep scars that the name still makes you wince, you can rock these as shoulder bags, too. Or stop being a little princess about it and carry your bag fearlessly on your hip like a boss.

Who is a waist bag for?

Well, honestly, it's for everyone! Whether your user profile is a scout, sniper, hiker, or even a city hipster, our range covers everything from a compact everyday waist pouch to a bigger, more tactical model. Above all, a waist bag suits situations where quick access to your gear matters: military missions, hunting, shooting, hiking, city use, or simply when your backpack is already full, and you need extra room for small items.

From military use to civilian life

Many of the waist bags we sell were designed for military use, but they work just as well for everyday life. The Savotta series bags (Kukkaro, Suur-Kukkaro, Askare) are made from Cordura and feature PALS webbing, enabling you to attach extra pouches or other gear as needed.

Spiritus Systems' Fanny SACK models, on the other hand, are designed for low-profile, tactical carry. You can swing the bag from your back to your front in seconds if, say, a knife, your keys, or some other essential needs to be in your hand fast. Smaller models like the Savotta Kukkaro are great for keys, a wallet, and a knife. Bigger ones, like the Savotta Askare, can carry binoculars, first-aid supplies, and spare magazines — and can be quickly attached directly to the backpack as part of a larger carry system.

How to choose a waist bag

Fanny packs come in many sizes and are made for many purposes. Here are a few things worth thinking through before you order one:

Capacity: A compact 1.5–2.5-liter bag is enough for everyday items and a small medikit. A bigger 5–7-liter model can fit larger gear needed in specific situations, such as magazines, larger first-aid supplies, and the like.

Attachments and versatility: PALS webbing and loop Velcro surfaces let you customize the bag to your needs.

Material: 500D Cordura is a great material if you need your pack for harsh conditions and want to enjoy its company for a long time. 

Carry style: Some bags are worn only on the waist or slung over the shoulder, others can also be quickly attached to a backpack or rucksack.
