A cabin-goer doesn't only have to cope with the weather but may make an Apocalypse Now! style journey inside their head as well. Having company will not make this experience any easier. We can't help much with these challenges, but we can offer some damn good clothes and kit for your little retreat from civilization.

Don't be too picky

The amount of luxuries a summer house should have is a divisive question. Some want electricity and running water, others look for a Spartan experience. However, a matching set of dishes and cutlery is out of place in most cabins, so be sure to mismatch mugs, towels, and spades. Thinking about porcelain? How about ugly aluminum instead? Hell, buy a strong German stainless steel cutlery set too!

Dress accordingly

Fashion is also best left to the city, choose relaxed and nature-proof stuff to wear instead. Don't get your #1 clothes sooty and smoky, but roughen up your surplus jacket to add character. Use those camo patterns! Dirt won't even show on them!

Finnish lake scenery

The Finnish summer often plays tricks on you, so be prepared: there's a 5-sec gap between these photos!

Take it easy

Whenever possible, take it easy. Field cots and hammocks are excellent choices for loitering, but also provide a place to sleep for passed-out guests (or yourself).

Don't forget aids!

Prepare for accidents too! The cabin should have a dedicated stash of first aid items, but a smaller kit is good to have on you at all times. As a preventive method, drink plenty of water too. Canteens are most suitable for this.

Have fun! We hope you'll survive!
