The stainless version was designed to meet the needs of maritime users and others who work in conditions where it is impossible to keep the blade dry.

Whether stainless steel is the right choice for you depends on your needs and preferences. Stainless steel has better edge retention than carbon steel, enabling it to remain sharper for longer. The downside is that once it is no longer sharp enough for you, it takes a bit longer to sharpen it.

Stainless steel also requires less maintenance. However, contrary to what the name might suggest, it is entirely possible for stainless steel to rust if you neglect it entirely. So do take care of this knife as well!

Description

A very small and handy stainless steel general-purpose knife with that sweet sheepsfoot blade profile familiar from bigger Skramas. Easy to carry, great for detailed tasks, sturdy as hell, keeps its edge longer than carbon steel, and won’t rust that easily in miserable conditions. A perfect match for a bigger Skrama or an axe. Made in Kauhava, Finland.

History

It all began with the forging of longer stainless steel Jääkäripuukkos. We recently found out that, in the land of Finland, in the fires of Kauhava, Laurin Metalli also forged in secret, a bunch of small stainless steel knives. And some things that should not have been forgotten were lost. History became legend. Legend became myth. And for many a year, the knives passed out of all knowledge…

In short, we've just discovered that a bunch of these knives were made once upon a time and thought you might appreciate them. For now, it is a limited edition, but if they prove to be popular, they might stay in our selection.

Use

This small blade is very easy to take along wherever you might need one. When out in the wilderness, it is good to carry a smaller knife for more detailed tasks and a large Skrama or axe for heavy-duty jobs. It is also wise to carry a spare knife in case you manage to lose the primary tool. This is also perfect for opening packages, peeling oranges, whittling this and that, and any other common tasks at home. And one of these could also be nice in the toolbox of your car.

Blade and handle

Just like our other Skramas, this knife has a sheepsfoot blade profile, and the spine is ground and beveled to strike sparks from ferro rods. You will be thankful for this when your clothes and matches are wet, the sky is falling, and you need a warming fire.

Very tough full tang blade with a textured over-molded rubber grip that isn’t slippery even when wet. The tang comes out of the back, forming a little knob with a hole for lanyards and such.

Sheath or no sheath?

You can acquire Varusteleka Skrama 80 with a sheath, with a plastic blade cover, or as is. If you like to make your sheaths, just get the knife. If you want to protect the blade but don’t want to carry the knife anywhere, just get it with the blade cover. If you want to carry the knife, your options are the blade cover with a belt loop, a Kydex sheath, or leather sheath.
