Designed for quick and easy layering over regular field/combat uniforms without the need to remove boots or gear. Lightweight, breathable and packable with reinforcements where you really need them. Overall a significant improvement over the Finnish Defence Forces issue M05 cold weather trousers.
Zip open the legs, open the fly and just layer up over your regular clothing and you're ready to relax in toasty, insulated warmth! Since low activity usually involves some sort of static activity (usually sitting or lying down) the seat, knees, and shins are reinforced with 500D Cordura to protect the other lightweight materials from abrasion. Full-length side leg zippers offer access to your pockets and gear. You can even pop out a pistol holster through the thermal trousers by opening the top of the leg zipper!
Although the design is focused at layering over all your other gear, the L5 Thermal Trousers can also be used as stand-alone outer layer trousers. The two thigh pockets are no full-sized pleated cargo pockets but offer enough room to store some essential items. The leg and fly zippers offer ventilation to help manage your thermal load during high activity levels.
The cuffs are designed to be secure, with a sewn-in piece of elastic webbing. The fit is designed for wear over regular combat boots, when worn this way the tight elastic will keep the cuffs in place and snow outside. When worn with thicker, insulated winter boots the legs are best worn inside the boot shaft.
Starting from 2023, the waist is a bit lower and there are suspender loops on the sides. The cuffs are also looser. The previous, retiring versions are marked in the listing.
The fifth layer of the Särmä TST Clothing System is designed for quick layering over your field wear, or for wear as a stand-alone cold weather uniform. Generous ventilation zippers minimize the thermal load of the layer, allowing the wearer added comfort. Camouflage prints and visible accessories are 100% NIR compliant.
